Johnson Efunkomaya Takes Over Lions District 404A3
Johnson Efunkomaya has assumed office as District Governor of Lions International District 404A3 for the 2026-2027 Lions Year, pledging to promote unity among members and strengthen humanitarian interventions across the district.
Efunkomaya made the commitment following his investiture at a ceremony held at Musical Village in Ikorodu, Lagos.
His new administration is expected to focus on practical community projects while strengthening participation among younger Nigerians.
Efunkomaya said his emergence as District Governor was the result of years of persistence.
He explained that he first contested the position about a decade ago and continued working towards the leadership role before eventually achieving his goal.
Unity to Drive New Administration
The new District Governor identified unity as one of the central principles of his administration.
According to him, Lions International has remained an important platform for humanitarian service, and cooperation among members would be essential to achieving the district’s objectives.
He urged members to remain committed to their aspirations and used his own experience to illustrate the importance of persistence.
His administration will seek to bring members together around humanitarian and community development projects.
Solar-Powered Boreholes Become Flagship Project
One of the major initiatives planned for the 2026-2027 Lions Year is the installation of modern solar-powered borehole water systems.
The project is expected to provide access to clean and reliable water in communities across the district.
Efunkomaya disclosed that two locations had already been identified for the initiative.
Work on the first projects is expected to commence before the end of August.
The decision to focus on solar-powered water infrastructure reflects the importance of access to clean water in community development.
Solar-powered systems can also reduce dependence on conventional electricity sources in areas where power supply remains unreliable.
N100 Million Target for Projects
Efunkomaya acknowledged that the cost of construction materials has increased.
He said the district’s N100 million target would not be sufficient to complete all the projects planned within a single year.
Rather than attempting to complete every initiative at once, the administration intends to begin what it can within available resources.
Projects that remain unfinished could then be continued by subsequent district leadership.
The approach is intended to ensure that the humanitarian agenda remains sustainable beyond a single leadership tenure.
Lions Global Causes Remain a Priority
Beyond the flagship water project, Efunkomaya said his administration would continue supporting the broader humanitarian priorities of Lions International.
These include sight preservation, diabetes awareness and support, childhood cancer initiatives, hunger alleviation and environmental protection.
Youth empowerment and emergency humanitarian response will also remain important areas of intervention.
The District Governor acknowledged that the scale of these responsibilities would require cooperation from Lions members and other stakeholders.
He stressed that no District Governor can successfully deliver the organisation’s objectives alone.
Focus on Young People
Youth recruitment is another major priority of the new administration.
Efunkomaya said the district would focus on attracting people between the ages of 25 and 35 through the Lions New Voices programme.
He argued that bringing younger people into the organisation is essential to its long-term survival.
Lions International is more than a century old, and the leadership believes that attracting younger members will help ensure that its humanitarian mission continues across generations.
The New Voices initiative is therefore expected to play a significant role during the new Lions Year.

While welcoming Efunkomaya into office, Past International Director Hamed Olugbenga Lawal urged him not to become complacent.
Lawal said the achievements of the new administration would be measured against the successes recorded by previous district leaders.
The advice places emphasis on continuity and measurable results.
Efunkomaya will therefore be expected not only to launch new initiatives but also to build on existing programmes.
