President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, alongside a special take-off grant of N15 billion to support its development.
The approval aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which provides for the expansion of the institution from its main campus in Wudil, Kano State, into multiple campuses across the country.
The new campus is expected to be funded through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) 2026 allocation and will cover key infrastructure, academic buildings, student accommodation, and core training facilities.
According to officials, a high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the National Universities Commission (NUC) recommended Erinja as the preferred location for the new campus.
The decision was based on considerations such as student intake capacity, funding availability, academic quality assurance, and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigerian Police Force, which is currently undergoing recruitment expansion.
President Tinubu’s administration said the project is aimed at strengthening institutional capacity within the police training system and improving the quality of modern policing education in Nigeria.
Officials also noted that expanding the Police Academy will help decentralise training, reduce pressure on the main campus in Kano, and improve access to police education across different regions of the country.
The government believes the initiative will contribute to improved national security by producing better-trained officers equipped to respond to evolving security challenges.
The Erinja campus is expected to serve as part of a broader strategy to modernise policing institutions and enhance operational readiness within the Nigeria Police Force.
