Rodrygo Disappointed by Ballon d’Or Snub Despite Strong Season

Real Madrid Forward Expresses Frustration After Missing Out on 2024 Ballon d'Or Shortlist

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo has expressed his disappointment at not making the 30-man shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d’Or. Despite a standout season with 17 goals and nine assists in 51 appearances, Rodrygo was overlooked for the prestigious award, with his Real Madrid teammates Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr securing nominations instead.

Rodrygo, 23, shared his feelings of upset with ESPN, stating, “I was upset, I think I deserved it. I don’t want to belittle the players who are there, I think they deserved it also. But I think I had a place in the 30.” His comments reflect his belief that his contributions last season warranted recognition on the Ballon d’Or shortlist.

The Selection Process

The Ballon d’Or nominees are selected by France Football’s editorial team, in collaboration with Ballon d’Or ambassador Didier Drogba and selected media members. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Paris on October 28.

Rodrygo’s Real Madrid teammates Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr, Dani Carvajal, Federico Valverde, Antonio Rudiger, and the now-retired Toni Kroos were all nominated, along with France striker Kylian Mbappe, who joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Rodrygo’s Versatility and Role

Rodrygo cited his versatility as a possible reason for his exclusion from the shortlist. “Often, I’m just filling spaces,” he explained. “Is someone missing there? Put Rodrygo in. Is someone missing on the right? Rodrygo. Is someone missing as number nine? Rodrygo. That’s it. It may get in my way a little, but I’m a team player.”

His self-described role as a versatile team player may have contributed to his omission, as his contributions are often spread across different positions rather than being focused on a single role.

Despite the snub, Rodrygo remains a key player for Real Madrid, who enjoyed a successful season, winning both La Liga and the Champions League. As he continues to contribute to his team’s success, Rodrygo’s focus will remain on his performance on the pitch, aiming to prove himself in future award considerations.
