Retired police officers in Nigeria have announced the start of an indefinite nationwide peaceful protest from today, September 29, 2026.
The Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria (PROF) says the protest is over the continued inclusion of the Nigeria Police Force in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The retirees are calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to assent to the Police Exit Bill, which was transmitted to the Presidency by the National Assembly on March 16, 2026. The bill seeks to remove the police from the CPS and establish a separate pension arrangement for police personnel.
The group had suspended an earlier planned protest in August after an assurance from the Inspector-General of Police that the pension issue would be addressed. However, the retirees say the expected resolution did not happen, leading them to reactivate the protest.
The planned demonstrations include locations such as the Police Force Headquarters, National Assembly and PenCom headquarters in Abuja, as well as selected locations across the states. The forum says participants are expected to remain peaceful and law-abiding.
