Poland produced a late fightback to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against Nigeria in an international friendly match played on Wednesday at the PGE Narodowy in Warsaw.

The Super Eagles were on course for victory until Przemysław Wiśniewski struck in the dying seconds of the match to cancel out Nigeria’s lead and ensure both sides shared the spoils.

Eric Chelle’s team opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through a well-constructed move involving Terem Moffi, who provided a right-footed assist to put Nigeria ahead.

However, Poland responded just before half-time when Kacper Potulski found the equaliser to send both teams into the break level at 1-1.

The second half saw Nigeria make several changes as the coaching staff tested different combinations. Philip Otele replaced Sevilla forward Akor Adams, while Semi Ajayi came on for Emmanuel Fernandez immediately after the restart.

Further substitutions saw Bruno Onyemaechi replace Zaidu Sanusi, Paul Onuachu come in for goalscorer Moffi, and Calvin Bassey introduced in place of Igoh Ogbu to strengthen the defence.

Nigeria regained the lead in the second half when Paul Onuachu converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-1 in favour of the Super Eagles.

With victory within reach, Nigeria looked set to repeat their 2018 friendly success over Poland, when Victor Moses scored the only goal in a 1-0 win ahead of the World Cup.

But heartbreak followed late on as Wiśniewski fired home five minutes into added time, denying Nigeria a win and ensuring a 2-2 result at full time.

Despite the disappointment, the friendly offered valuable insight for Eric Chelle’s side as they continue preparations with upcoming international fixtures, including a match against Portugal on June 10.

The Super Eagles, who are not participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, are using these friendlies to refine tactics and integrate new players ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
