The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has resigned amid corruption allegations and growing criticism over the performance of Nigeria’s national football teams.
Gusau announced his resignation on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during a press conference in Abuja. His decision comes just weeks before the NFF’s next elective congress, scheduled for September. Reports also indicate that other senior officials and members of the federation’s leadership stepped down.
The resignation follows a difficult period for Nigerian football. The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Super Falcons also missed out on the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, ending their long record of appearing at every edition of the women’s tournament since it began in 1991. Another major issue surrounding the crisis is the management of public funds allocated to Nigerian football. Reports said the NFF was facing scrutiny over the alleged use of ₦17 billion provided by the Federal Government in 2024 to address outstanding payments owed to national team players and officials.
