The Nigeria Customs Service (Nigeria Customs Service) has called for enhanced collaboration with the media to improve public awareness, strengthen border security, and support national development efforts.

The appeal was made by the Service’s National Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, during a media parley held at the Kano/Jigawa Area Command headquarters in Kano.

The event, themed “Building Synergy Between the Media and Customs for Enhanced Stakeholders’ Awareness and National Development,” was organised as part of renewed efforts to deepen cooperation between the agency and journalists for accurate and credible information dissemination.

Maiwada said the media plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between the Customs Service and the public, stressing that effective communication is essential for transparency and trust in government operations.

He noted that Nigerians rely heavily on credible information to make informed decisions, making the media an indispensable partner in the agency’s work.

According to him, the Customs Service has intensified its use of technology-driven systems to improve efficiency, revenue generation, and service delivery, adding that accurate reporting is necessary to reflect these developments correctly.

He also highlighted the agency’s commitment to disseminating information in multiple languages to ensure wider reach and better understanding among citizens across the country.

Maiwada urged journalists to continue supporting the Service through responsible reporting that promotes national development and public awareness of Customs operations.

In his remarks, the Acting Customs Controller of the Kano/Katsina Area Command, Usman Adamu, commended the initiative, describing it as a step toward strengthening cooperation between the agency and the media.

He expressed appreciation for journalists’ consistent support in covering Customs activities and reinforcing public understanding of its operations.

Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, CSP Tahir Balarabe, said the engagement was aimed at improving the flow of accurate information between the Service and the public.

The media parley was attended by journalists from Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and Kaduna States, reflecting the Service’s regional engagement strategy.

The Customs Service reiterated its commitment to transparency, stakeholder engagement, and improved communication as part of broader reforms in Nigeria’s border management system.
