The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebration.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Monday through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.

According to the statement, the decision reflects the government’s recognition of the spiritual importance of Eid-ul-Adha to Muslims in Nigeria and around the world.

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Eid-el-Kabir or the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant Islamic celebrations, symbolising obedience, faith, and compassion.

The minister congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and in the diaspora, describing the celebration as one rooted in sacrifice and devotion to God. He also urged citizens to use the festive period for prayers and reflection on national peace, security, and development.

“The Federal Government urges all Nigerians to use this period for prayer and sober reflection, asking for divine guidance upon the country as it continues its pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity for every citizen,” the statement read.

The government also extended goodwill messages, calling for unity, mutual understanding, and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians of all faiths.

Meanwhile, preparations for increased travel have begun across parts of the country, including Lagos, as citizens move to celebrate with family and loved ones.

To ensure safety during the holiday period, the Federal Road Safety Corps (Federal Road Safety Corps) announced the deployment of 950 personnel across Kwara State, along with patrol vehicles, ambulances, and a tow truck to manage traffic and respond to emergencies.

The FRSC advised motorists to obey traffic rules, warning against speeding, dangerous driving, overloading, phone use while driving, and other violations that could lead to accidents during the festive period.

The government reiterated its call for caution, urging citizens to prioritise safety as they travel and celebrate across the country.
