A United States transparency advocacy group has opened a temporary exhibition in New York City featuring millions of pages of documents released by the US Department of Justice relating to late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The exhibition, titled The Donald J. Trump and Jeffrey Epstein Memorial Reading Room, contains roughly 3.5 million pages of records organised into 3,437 printed and bound volumes displayed on shelves.

The project was created by the Institute of Primary Facts, a Washington-based nonprofit group focused on transparency and public accountability.

According to the organisation, the exhibition was designed to highlight the scale of the documents released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

“The truth is hard to deny when it’s printed and bound for you to see,” the organisation stated on its website.

The temporary library is located in the Tribeca area of Manhattan, where visitors can register online to view the exhibit.

However, access to the actual documents has been restricted due to concerns over privacy after the Department of Justice reportedly failed to properly redact the identities of some victims named in the files.

As a result, only certain professionals, including journalists and lawyers, are permitted to consult the records directly.

The exhibit also explores the long-running relationship between Donald Trump and Epstein, who died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges involving minors.

Trump and Epstein were known to have socialised for years before reportedly falling out in 2004 over a property dispute.

The US president has repeatedly denied wrongdoing despite his name appearing in multiple documents connected to the Epstein investigation.

One of the organisers of the exhibition, David Garrett, said the initiative was aimed at educating the public about corruption and accountability in the United States.

“We’re a pro-democracy organization, with the goal of educating the public using these kinds of pop-up museums and other in-real-life experiences to help people understand the corruption in the United States, the dangers to democracy,” Garrett told AFP.

He added that the organisers hoped the exhibition would generate public pressure for greater transparency regarding the handling of the Epstein files by the Trump administration.

“And what we attempted to do here was to create, or help to create public outcry to have real accountability,” he said.

The exhibition is scheduled to remain open to the public until May 21.
