Argentina captain Lionel Messi has sparked fresh injury concerns ahead of the FIFA World Cup after Inter Miami confirmed he is suffering from muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.
The Major League Soccer side released a medical update on Monday following Messi’s early exit during Inter Miami’s thrilling 6-4 victory over Philadelphia on Sunday.
The 38-year-old football icon appeared uncomfortable late in the match and grabbed the back of his left leg before asking to be substituted in the 73rd minute. Despite the concern, Messi was seen walking normally as he headed to the dressing room.
In a statement, Inter Miami CF confirmed the initial diagnosis after further medical examinations.
“After undergoing further medical tests this Monday, the initial diagnosis indicates an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring,” the club stated.
“The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress.”
The update leaves uncertainty surrounding Messi’s condition only weeks before Argentina begin the defence of their World Cup crown in the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Argentina are scheduled to open their campaign against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16.
Messi has carefully managed his workload since joining Inter Miami in 2023, with the club often resting him during busy fixture periods to avoid injury setbacks.
Major League Soccer has now entered a break period ahead of the World Cup, potentially giving the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner additional recovery time.
Although Messi has not officially confirmed his participation in the tournament, he is widely expected to feature in what would be a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance for the Argentine legend.
Argentina national football team are expected to announce their squad next week before travelling to the United States for warm-up matches against Honduras on June 6 and Iceland on June 9.
Fans and football observers around the world will now anxiously await further updates on Messi’s recovery as Argentina prepare for another shot at global glory.
