The Lagos State Government has approved designated mining sites for Hitech Construction Company to support ongoing work on the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road project.
The announcement was made during the Year 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources held in Alausa.
Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, disclosed that the approvals are intended to accelerate infrastructure delivery tied to the coastal highway project.
According to him, designated mining sites have been approved in Ilamija, Kajola, Orimedu, and Akodo corridors to serve as borrow pits supplying construction materials for the project.
“Designated Mining Approvals: To accelerate critical infrastructure, the Ministry facilitated the approval of designated mining sites at Ilamija, Kajola/Orimedu, and Akodo for Hitech Construction Company, directly supporting the development of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project,” Ogunleye said.
The government explained that the move is aimed at ensuring a steady supply of construction materials along key development corridors in Lagos State.
Officials also revealed that the state is currently tracking 20 mineral resource sites, including 13 active and seven inactive locations across Ikorodu, Epe/Ibeju-Lekki/Ajah, and Badagry.
In addition, 141 approved revenue consultants have been deployed to improve compliance and oversight within the mining sector.
The ministry said joint operations with the Lagos Waste Management Authority led to the deployment of specialised corridor sweepers, known as “Highway Doctors,” along the Ajah–Ibeju-Lekki–Epe axis to manage sand spillages linked to construction and mining activities.
Beyond mining approvals, the ministry is also facilitating the Right of Way for the Lekki–Epe Integrated Energy Corridor, a 132kV transmission line linking Ajah, Eleko Junction and Alaro City, alongside a gas pipeline to improve industrial power supply.
The state also disclosed the deployment of four marine filling stations under its waterways energy initiative to support cleaner fuel supply to ferry terminals under the Lagos State Waterways Authority.
In the power sector, the ministry approved 14 licences and permits covering off-grid, embedded generation, independent distribution, metering and mini-grid projects across Lagos.
These include projects such as a 5.8MW facility at Cadbury Nigeria Plc and a 9MW embedded generation project by Isolo Power Gen Limited, alongside additional approvals for distribution and mini-grid operators.
The Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway remains one of Nigeria’s largest infrastructure projects, spanning over 750 kilometres and cutting across multiple coastal states.
Construction began in March 2024, with the first Lagos section commissioned in May 2025. The project is being executed by Hitech Construction Company under a major federal infrastructure framework.
According to the Federal Government, sections of the highway are currently under construction across Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States, with funding support from international development financing institutions.
