Former England international Ashley Young has announced his retirement from professional football, revealing that his next match for Ipswich Town could be his last after a remarkable 23-year career.
In a reflective post shared via his verified X handle on Thursday, Young celebrated a journey that saw him play across some of football’s most iconic stadiums, including Vicarage Road, Villa Park, Wembley, Old Trafford, the San Siro and Goodison Park.
“From Sefton Road to Vicarage Road to Villa Park to Wembley to Old Trafford to San Siro back to Villa Park to Goodison Park and finally to Portman Road. It’s been some journey that I only dreamt of as a boy!” he wrote.
The 38-year-old suggested that Saturday’s fixture could mark his final appearance in professional football.
“But with this dream, there has to be an ending, and Saturday might be the last game of my professional career. 23 years and out!” he added, ending his message with “To be continued…”
Tributes quickly followed from former clubs. Aston Villa praised his contribution, noting his 250 appearances and 40 goals, and describing him as one of the club’s finest modern-era players.
“Congratulations on an incredible career,” the club said.
Everton also joined in acknowledging his achievements, commending him for a remarkable career.
Young’s journey has included spells at top clubs such as Manchester United and Inter Milan, where he established himself as a versatile and consistent performer across domestic and European competitions.
As he prepares for what could be his final game, the defender leaves behind a legacy spanning over two decades at the highest level of football.
