President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has urged Nigerians not to lose hope despite the security challenges facing the country, emphasizing the importance of prayer, resilience and national unity.

Akpabio made the appeal during an Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration.

The service, themed “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” brought together government officials, religious leaders and citizens to reflect on the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.

Speaking at the event, the Senate President recalled his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, where he introduced monthly prayer sessions to address rising cases of militancy, kidnapping and violent crimes.

According to him, prayer played an important role during challenging periods and remains necessary as the nation continues to confront insecurity.

Akpabio urged Nigerians to continue praying for the exposure and defeat of those behind acts of terrorism, violence and criminality across the country.

He expressed concern over the growing impact of insecurity on communities, farmers, travellers and families, noting that many citizens continue to live with fear and uncertainty.

Despite the challenges, he said Nigeria has repeatedly demonstrated resilience throughout its history by overcoming political crises, economic difficulties, insurgencies and public health emergencies such as Ebola and COVID-19.

The Senate President described Nigeria’s democratic journey as a testament to endurance, unity and hope, stressing that the nation has remained steadfast despite periods of turbulence.

He also acknowledged the suffering of victims of kidnapping and violent attacks, particularly children held in captivity and families struggling with the emotional trauma of uncertainty.

Drawing from his personal experiences during the Nigerian civil war, Akpabio said he understands the pain and anxiety faced by families affected by violence and insecurity.

He assured Nigerians that there is hope for a better future and reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to restoring peace and security across the country.

According to him, the government remains focused on defeating criminal elements, securing the release of abducted persons and creating a safer environment for all citizens.

Akpabio called on Nigerians to remain united and continue supporting efforts aimed at strengthening national security and promoting peace.

Also speaking at the event, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to address economic challenges and strengthen measures to combat insecurity nationwide.

He added that authorities remain committed to securing the release of all abducted persons and improving the safety and well-being of Nigerians.
