Ethiopia Launches Bishoftu International Airport, Aiming to Become Africa’s Aviation Hub

Greenfield airport project to handle 110 million passengers annually, boosting trade, tourism, and regional connectivity.

Ethiopia is taking a major step in reshaping Africa’s aviation landscape with the development of Bishoftu International Airport (BIA), a flagship greenfield project envisioned as a continental aviation hub serving Ethiopia and the wider African region.

Located approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Addis Ababa, BIA is designed to relieve capacity pressures at the existing Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and position Ethiopia as a key player in regional and global aviation.

The project will adopt a phased approach, scaling infrastructure in line with demand. Phase one, valued at about USD 12.5 billion, is expected to be completed by 2030 and accommodate up to 60 million passengers annually. Upon full development, BIA will handle 110 million passengers yearly, making it the largest airport in Africa and a major driver for trade, tourism, and regional investment.

“Bishoftu International Airport marks a historic leap in Africa’s aviation journey, significantly enhancing trade, tourism, and business across the continent and beyond,” said Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. He added, “With cutting-edge technology, sustainable design, and unparalleled connectivity, the new airport positions Ethiopia to become the aviation capital of Africa. I urge financers worldwide to join us in supporting this ambitious project.”

The project is spearheaded by Ethiopian Airlines Group (EAG), with support from the African Development Bank (AfDB) as the Initial Mandated Lead Arranger, Dar Al-Handasah Consultants and KPMG as technical and financial advisors, and Clyde & Co as legal counsel.

EAG has released the Project Information Memorandum, Financial Model, and supporting documents to prospective lenders, marking a significant milestone toward financial close. Prequalification of EPC contractors is underway, with bid submissions expected by mid-December 2025, signaling readiness to move from planning to procurement and implementation.

The project will be highlighted at the Africa Investment Forum (AIF) Market Days in Rabat, Morocco, from 26-28 November 2025, aiming to attract interest from development financiers, commercial banks, export credit agencies, and institutional investors.

With its scale, ambition, and strategic location, Bishoftu International Airport stands as a defining project for Ethiopia and a symbol of Africa’s transformation in aviation and infrastructure.
