ChatGPT is set for its most significant redesign since its 2022 launch, as OpenAI moves to transform the platform into a “superapp” that combines AI agents, coding tools, and third-party integrations, according to a report by the Financial Times.

The planned overhaul is expected to roll out in the coming weeks and marks a strategic shift away from ChatGPT’s original chatbot design toward a more task-oriented platform capable of executing complex actions on behalf of users.

The move comes as OpenAI, valued at around $850 billion, accelerates efforts to reach profitability ahead of a planned initial public offering and strengthens its position in an increasingly competitive AI market dominated by rivals such as Anthropic.

According to the report, Thibault Sottiaux, who previously led Codex and now oversees OpenAI’s core product and platform, described the company’s long-term vision as building a personal AI agent capable of assisting users across both work and personal life.

He noted that users will be able to interact with the system across mobile, desktop, and web, with future versions potentially enabling voice-based interaction in real-world settings such as cars.

Alex Embiricos, OpenAI’s head of enterprise product, suggested a future where a single AI system could handle most user needs, reflecting the company’s belief that traditional software brands may eventually converge into unified AI-driven platforms.

Internally, one OpenAI employee was quoted as saying, “Chat is dead,” reflecting the company’s shift away from traditional messaging-style interaction toward proactive AI systems.

The redesigned interface is expected to highlight tools such as coding assistant Codex, image generation features, and third-party apps including Canva and Booking.com.

Codex has reportedly grown rapidly, reaching more than 5 million weekly active users, with most being paying customers—an important distinction as OpenAI seeks to increase revenue beyond its free-tier ChatGPT base.

The company’s enterprise business, which already serves around 2 million businesses and accounts for roughly 40% of revenue, is expected to expand further as OpenAI pushes toward a 50% enterprise revenue share.

Over time, OpenAI plans to reduce reliance on manual prompting, instead building systems that can automatically interpret user intent and execute tasks with minimal input.

This strategy aligns OpenAI more closely with competitors like Anthropic, which is also positioning its business-focused AI systems for long-term growth and investor appeal ahead of a potential IPO.

Separately, OpenAI has also announced plans to introduce advertising into ChatGPT, with pilot programs expected to begin in the United States for free-tier users and lower-cost subscription plans, while premium users will remain ad-free.
