NNPP Urges INEC to Disregard Kwankwasiya Movement’s Congresses

Party describes planned congresses by Rabiu Kwankwaso-led group as unconstitutional and warns INEC to uphold court orders.

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Monday called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Nigerians to disregard purported congresses by the Kwankwasiya Movement led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, describing the activities as unconstitutional.

In a statement released by its National Secretary, Mr. Ogini Olaposi, the NNPP said court-ordered congresses had already been held and concluded. The party stressed that the Kwankwaso-led group has no authority to conduct fresh congresses on its behalf.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Kwankwaso faction, in a letter to INEC, had announced plans to conduct fresh congresses and a convention from November 25, 2025, to January 2026. However, the NNPP said the group’s mandate expired following the 2023 presidential election.

The party further stated that Kwankwaso and certain members of his group were expelled for anti-party activities. “We are still amazed that a man of Kwankwaso’s standing will insist on hijacking a party that gave him a soft landing to contest the 2023 presidential election for free,” the statement said.

The NNPP urged INEC to respect court orders and update its website with the authentic leadership of the party. The Abia State High Court and the Federal Capital Territory High Court had confirmed the expulsion of Kwankwaso and his supporters from NNPP’s internal democratic processes.

“It is most unfortunate that Kwankwaso continues to disobey and abuse court judgments. INEC, as an umpire, cannot afford to sit on the fence on matters of urgent importance to society,” Olaposi said.

The party stressed its commitment to maintaining peace and directed its members to disregard the so-called congresses. “We appeal to INEC to help democracy succeed and sustain in Nigeria. The Renewed Hope Agenda of the present administration can only succeed if laws are obeyed and respected,” the statement concluded.
