The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced the self-acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment on multiple terrorism-related charges.
Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Wednesday, ruling that Kanu would serve life imprisonmenton counts one, four, five, and six — noting that these counts ordinarily carried the death penalty.
The court further sentenced Kanu to: 20 years imprisonment on Count Three, 5 years imprisonment on Count Seven,
with no option of fine for any of the charges.
Justice Omotosho stated that all sentences would run concurrently, saying:
“I hereby sentence the convict to life imprisonment for counts one, four, five, and six, instead of death sentence.
With respect to Count Three, he is hereby sentenced to 20 years imprisonment with no option of fine.
For Count Seven, he is sentenced to five years imprisonment with no option of fine. To extend the mercy, I hereby order that the sentence shall run concurrently.”
Details of the judgment and further developments are expected to follow as the case continues to generate national attention.
