A tragic incident has thrown Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, into mourning after a soldier allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life.
The Nigerian Army confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday by its Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Stephen Nwachukwu, identifying the soldier as Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, serving with the 221 Battalion at the cantonment.
“The tragic incident, which occurred on 11 October 2025 at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, has caused a tense atmosphere, leaving barracks residents in shock as to the circumstances that could have led to such an unfortunate event,” the statement read.
According to the Army, the bodies of Lance Corporal Femi and his wife were discovered in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, within the cantonment.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the soldier, who had been on duty, sought permission from his superior to attend to personal matters before the incident occurred.
“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets this tragedy and commiserates with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased over the painful loss. The Army also prays for the peaceful repose of their souls,” Nwachukwu added.
He further disclosed that the remains of the couple have been preserved, while an in-depth investigation has commenced to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assured the public that the findings of the investigation would be made public and that measures would be implemented to prevent future occurrences.
Residents of the cantonment have described the tragedy as “deeply shocking and heartbreaking,” calling for improved mental health support systems for military personnel and their families.
