The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has extended the registration deadline for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates, Second Series, commonly known as the WAEC GCE.
WAEC announced the extension on Saturday, August 15, 2026, giving prospective candidates additional time to complete their registration. According to the announcement, candidates can now register until Friday, August 28, 2026.
The examination is designed for private candidates who are not enrolled in regular secondary schools. It also provides an opportunity for individuals who want to improve their previous O’Level results or obtain the qualification for further education, employment or other purposes.
The extension is expected to benefit candidates who were unable to complete their registration before the previous deadline. WAEC urged prospective candidates to take advantage of the additional time and ensure that their registration is completed before the new closing date.
According to reports, registration for the 2026 Second Series began on May 4, 2026. The latest extension replaces the earlier deadline of July 31, giving candidates several more weeks to finalise the process.
The 2026 WAEC GCE Second Series is also expected to be conducted entirely as a Computer-Based Examination (CBE). The move reflects the increasing use of technology in Nigeria’s examination system and is part of efforts to modernise the assessment process.
Candidates planning to sit for the examination are expected to provide accurate information during registration. WAEC also advised prospective candidates to confirm the available examination towns at the nearest WAEC office in their respective states before completing their registration. This will help candidates make appropriate choices about where they intend to sit for the examination.
The registration fee was reported to remain at ₦37,000, while the examination is scheduled to take place between September and October 2026.
