The 2026 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship has officially taken centre stage in New York, bringing together some of the biggest names in world tennis for one of the most exciting events of the tournament’s opening week.

The competition is being held on August 25 and 26 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, with the first and second rounds taking place on Tuesday before the semi-finals and final are played on Wednesday.

One of the biggest attractions is the return of tennis legend Serena Williams, who is teaming up with Spanish star and reigning men’s singles champion Carlos Alcaraz.

The pair received a wildcard into the competition, creating one of the most talked-about partnerships in the tournament. Williams is making her first competitive appearance at Flushing Meadows since 2022, adding even more excitement for tennis fans.

Williams and Alcaraz are scheduled to face Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool in the first round.

The partnership between Serena and Alcaraz has attracted major attention because it brings together one of the greatest players in tennis history and one of the leading stars of the current generation.

Another major attraction is the pairing of Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka.

Djokovic, one of the most successful men’s players in tennis history, joins forces with Sabalenka, one of the leading women’s players in the world. Their partnership is expected to be one of the strongest and most closely watched combinations in the competition.

The mixed doubles event has become increasingly popular because of its star-studded format.

Unlike traditional doubles competitions, the revamped tournament brings together some of the world’s leading singles players, creating unusual partnerships and exciting match-ups that fans would rarely see during the regular tennis season.

The 16-team main draw includes several other high-profile pairings. American stars Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz are also competing, while defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori return to defend their title.

The competition also features a major financial incentive, with the winning team set to receive a prize worth $1 million.

Matches are played under a shortened format designed to make the competition faster and more entertaining. The earlier rounds use shorter sets, while the final follows a slightly longer format.

For Serena Williams, the event is particularly significant.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion has already made history at the US Open and remains one of the most successful players ever to compete at Flushing Meadows. She previously won the US Open mixed doubles title in 1998 alongside Max Mirnyi.

Her return alongside Alcaraz is expected to be one of the biggest stories of the tournament.

The event is also giving younger players and current stars an opportunity to compete alongside opponents and partners from different generations.

With Djokovic, Sabalenka, Alcaraz, Williams and several other major names involved, the competition has attracted global attention even before the main singles tournament begins.

As the first-round matches get underway, fans will be watching closely to see which star partnerships can live up to expectations.

The tournament promises entertainment, surprise results and memorable moments as some of tennis’s biggest personalities compete for one of the sport’s most unusual and exciting titles.
