Tens of thousands of people have been displaced across Sudan’s Kordofan region as fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues to intensify.
Many families are now fleeing their homes and travelling towards El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, in search of safety. Reports from the area show that more than 5,000 families arrived in El Obeid within just one week as violence forced people to abandon their communities.
The situation has placed enormous pressure on El Obeid, where displaced families are struggling to find food, shelter and other basic necessities. Mothers and children are among those arriving in the city, with many seeking refuge in already overcrowded camps and temporary shelters.
The wider humanitarian situation in Kordofan has also continued to worsen. The United Nations has reported that more than 200,000 people have been newly displaced across the region since late last year because of intensified fighting.
The conflict in Sudan began in 2023 and has caused widespread destruction across the country. The continuing violence between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF has forced millions of people from their homes and created one of the world’s most serious humanitarian crises.
For families escaping Kordofan, reaching El Obeid does not necessarily mean that their struggles are over. Many arrive with very few belongings and face uncertainty about where they will live and how they will survive in the coming weeks.
Humanitarian organisations are working to support displaced people, but the growing number of families fleeing the fighting is putting additional pressure on available resources.
The latest displacement highlights the continuing impact of Sudan’s conflict on ordinary civilians. As fighting continues in Kordofan, more families may be forced to leave their homes and join the growing number of people seeking safety elsewhere.
The international community has continued to call for greater humanitarian assistance and stronger efforts to protect civilians caught in the conflict. However, for thousands of Sudanese families arriving in El Obeid, the immediate priority remains finding safety, food and shelter.
