South African police have arrested five people after uncovering an alleged large-scale crystal methamphetamine manufacturing operation on a farm in Limpopo province.
The raid took place near the town of Musina following what authorities described as a two-month intelligence-driven investigation. Police seized drugs, laboratory equipment and an undisclosed amount of cash. The total value of the drugs and equipment was estimated at about 600 million rand, or more than $37 million.
The suspects are aged between 20 and 47. Authorities said those arrested include two Mexican nationals, two Zimbabwean nationals and one Malawian national. They are expected to face charges linked to the alleged manufacture and possession of illicit drugs.
South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, popularly known as the Hawks, said the discovery exposed what appeared to be a sophisticated operation allegedly set up for the manufacture and distribution of dangerous illicit substances.
The raid has also renewed concerns about the growing presence of international organised criminal networks in Africa. Authorities have carried out several major drug busts in South Africa in recent years, including operations involving foreign nationals and suspected large-scale methamphetamine laboratories.
According to reports, the latest operation is part of a wider effort by South African law enforcement agencies to crack down on drug trafficking and the production of illegal substances.
The case is expected to receive close attention as investigators work to determine whether the alleged operation had connections to wider criminal networks operating across national borders.
For South African authorities, the arrest represents another major step in efforts to fight organised crime and prevent the country from being used as a base for the large-scale production and distribution of illegal drugs.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Musina Magistrates’ Court, where the legal process will begin.
