Thousands of people displaced by conflict have fled an Ebola-affected camp in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) after soldiers entered the site, according to United Nations and Congolese officials.

The mass movement has raised concerns that the Ebola virus could spread to surrounding communities, as people who have left the affected area may be difficult for health authorities to trace and monitor.

The camp is located in an area already facing insecurity and displacement caused by conflict. The sudden departure of residents is creating an additional challenge for health workers who are attempting to identify possible contacts and limit transmission.

Authorities are working to track people who left the camp and strengthen public-health measures in nearby communities. The situation demonstrates the difficulty of responding to infectious disease outbreaks in regions where armed conflict and population displacement are already affecting access to healthcare.

The development comes as DR Congo continues to deal with humanitarian challenges in its eastern provinces, where violence has forced large numbers of people from their homes.

Health officials are particularly concerned about the possibility that people fleeing the affected camp could carry the virus to locations where health facilities and surveillance systems are less prepared to respond.

International and local agencies are therefore focusing on monitoring displaced populations, identifying potential cases and maintaining disease-control measures while also addressing the security situation.
