The Republic of Congo has announced that it will abolish visa requirements for all African nationals entering its territory, effective January 1, 2027, in a major policy shift aimed at advancing continental integration.

The announcement was made by President Denis Sassou Nguesso during the 2026 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank in Brazzaville, held alongside Africa Day celebrations.

The decision positions Congo among a growing number of African countries embracing visa-free travel policies for citizens of other African states.

Countries such as Benin, Togo, Rwanda, Ghana, Seychelles, and The Gambia have already implemented similar frameworks to ease mobility across the continent.

Benin has granted visa-free access to Africans since 2020 for stays of up to 90 days, while Togo introduced a 30-day visa-free entry policy in 2026.

President Sassou Nguesso described the reform as a step toward strengthening African unity and economic cooperation.

He urged African governments to move beyond “selfishness and narrow nationalism” in order to accelerate development and regional integration.

The policy is also aligned with broader continental efforts under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to improve trade and economic exchange across Africa.

The visa-free initiative is expected to benefit entrepreneurs, students, researchers, artists, and tourists by simplifying travel across borders.

Analysts say the move could boost investment, tourism, and cultural exchange while enhancing Congo’s position as a regional hub.

However, authorities are yet to release full implementation details, including permitted duration of stay, documentation requirements, and health or security protocols.

As preparations continue, the reform is being viewed as both a symbolic and practical step toward deeper African connectivity and economic cooperation.

From 2027 onward, the Republic of Republic of the Congo aims to position itself at the centre of Africa’s growing push for free movement and integration.
