There is growing uncertainty over the political future of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, after he reportedly stormed out of the All Progressives Congress (APC) screening committee venue in Abuja on Sunday.
Fubara arrived at the Plateau State Governors’ Lodge, venue of the screening exercise, at about 3:15pm but left shortly afterwards in what eyewitnesses described as an angry and abrupt exit.
His sudden departure has fuelled speculation that the governor may not have been screened by the committee, which is largely composed of members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC).
Speaking to journalists after the session, APC National Secretary and committee secretary, Ajibola Basiru, said the screening process is still ongoing and no final report has been submitted.
“I don’t know what you mean by screen, anybody that appears before screening committee, of course, is necessary as part of the process,” Basiru said.
“It is natural that everybody must appear before the screening committee. After the exercise, the screening committee will issue its report,” he added.
He stressed that the committee is yet to conclude its assignment.
“As at now, the screening committee, when it has completed seeing everybody it is supposed to see, will sit down and come up with reports on the screening. As at now, there’s no report of the screening committee,” he stated.
The incident has sparked political speculation within Rivers State and beyond, particularly given ongoing tensions surrounding the governor’s political alignment and relationship with key actors in the ruling party.
All Progressives Congress officials, however, have maintained that the screening process remains procedural and incomplete, urging the public to await the committee’s official report.
The development adds another layer of uncertainty to the already tense political landscape in Rivers State, where leadership struggles and party dynamics have remained in the spotlight in recent months.
Further details on the outcome of the screening exercise are expected once the committee concludes its deliberations and submits its official findings.
