Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, on her election as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), describing her emergence as a historic achievement for the legal profession.
In a statement issued on Monday, the governor said Badejo-Okusanya’s election as only the second female president in the history of the NBA was a reflection of her decades of dedication, professionalism, and commitment to the rule of law.
Sanwo-Olu said her victory was well deserved and highlighted her outstanding contributions to the legal profession over the years.
“Congratulations to Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, on her historic election as the President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
“Becoming only the second female president in the history of the NBA is no small feat and is a well-deserved milestone.
“Over the years, she has built a reputation for excellence, legal precision, and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
“Her rise to the leadership of the Bar reflects decades of hard work and relentless dedication to justice,” the governor said.
Sanwo-Olu described the election as a proud moment for the legal profession and an inspiration to young women across Lagos State and Nigeria who aspire to occupy leadership positions.
He expressed confidence that Badejo-Okusanya would provide visionary leadership during her tenure and further strengthen the administration of justice in the country.
“I have full confidence that her tenure will bring visionary leadership and advance the cause of justice in our society.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Lagos State, I wish her a successful and impactful term in office,” he added.
Badejo-Okusanya emerged winner of the NBA’s 2026 national officers’ election after polling 12,317 votes, representing 47.18 per cent of the total votes cast.
She defeated her closest challenger, Lateef Akangbe, SAN, who secured 7,934 votes, while Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, received 5,855 votes.
She will serve a two-year term from 2026 to 2028, succeeding the outgoing NBA President, Afam Osigwe.
Badejo-Okusanya becomes the second woman to lead the association, following Priscilla Kuye, who served as the NBA’s first female president between 1991 and 1992.
