The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called upon telecommunications operators (Telcos) to adopt data-driven and intelligent solutions aimed at improving network performance, coverage, and capacity. This call was made in the NCC’s latest survey report on Machine Learning (ML) and Data Analytics.
Highlighting the importance of increased adoption of Machine Learning and Data Analytics among telecoms operators, the survey emphasized the significant contribution of the telecoms industry to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and its impact on the economy. The NCC underscored the need to safeguard and enhance the industry’s performance, thus prompting the survey.
The study, conducted by Hyjosam Integrated Service Limited on behalf of the NCC, examined the current and future landscape of machine learning and data analytics adoption in mobile communications network planning and optimization within Nigeria. Utilizing a cross-sectional approach, the research incorporated surveys, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews to uncover trends, challenges, and opportunities in the telecoms sector.
Mr. Reuben Muoka, the Director of Corporate Affairs at NCC, provided insights into the research objectives, emphasizing the evolution and advancements in machine learning technology. He stated, “Machine learning today is more advanced than machine learning of the past,” suggesting the need for Telcos to leverage these advancements to enhance their operations.
The survey report serves as a strategic guide for Telcos in leveraging data-driven solutions to address network challenges and optimize performance. By embracing Machine Learning and Data Analytics, telecoms operators can enhance service delivery, improve network efficiency, and meet the growing demands of subscribers in Nigeria’s dynamic telecommunications landscape.
