MTN Nigeria has announced plans to host an independent public inquest aimed at examining how mobile data is consumed and addressing growing concerns among subscribers over the rapid depletion of data bundles.
The event is scheduled to take place on June 6 and comes amid increasing public scrutiny of mobile data usage patterns and persistent complaints from consumers regarding data exhaustion.
According to the telecommunications company, the initiative is designed to place mobile data operations under public examination while promoting greater transparency and digital literacy within Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
MTN noted that Nigeria’s mobile internet ecosystem has expanded significantly in recent years, driven by rising internet subscriptions and growing demand for digital services across various sectors of the economy.
To ensure public participation and credibility, the company said the proceedings will adopt a democratic format that allows consumers to play an active role in the inquiry.
As part of the process, subscribers and members of the public will be invited to select a five-member prosecution team that will represent consumer interests during the session.
The team will be responsible for reviewing technical evidence, questioning experts and presenting consumer concerns relating to data usage, billing systems and network operations.
On the other side, MTN said its technical executives, network engineers and independent mobile technology specialists will form a defence team tasked with explaining the company’s data management processes and responding to issues raised by consumers.
The telecommunications operator stated that both sides will have the opportunity to present evidence, call witnesses and cross-examine technical submissions during the proceedings.
MTN also disclosed that all technical demonstrations and backend diagnostic tools presented during the hearing will undergo independent verification by professional services firm KPMG.
The company said the verification process is intended to ensure transparency, accuracy and public confidence in the inquiry.
Although the venue has not yet been announced, MTN confirmed that the event will be streamed live across multiple platforms, including television stations and social media channels, to enable broad public participation.
Industry analysts believe the planned public inquest reflects growing consumer demand for greater transparency regarding data consumption, billing mechanisms and network management practices.
As digital connectivity becomes increasingly important for communication, education, business and entertainment, consumers have continued to seek clearer explanations about how mobile data is measured and consumed.
Stakeholders say the initiative could provide a valuable platform for subscribers to gain a better understanding of data usage patterns while giving telecom operators an opportunity to address longstanding concerns and misconceptions surrounding data depletion.
Consumer advocacy groups and industry observers have also noted that increased transparency could help strengthen trust between service providers and subscribers.
If successful, the public inquiry may set a precedent for greater engagement between telecommunications companies and consumers on issues affecting service delivery and customer experience.
The event is expected to attract widespread attention from subscribers, consumer rights advocates, technology experts and industry stakeholders when it takes place on June 6.
