FG Inaugurates Steering Committee for Nigeria’s Digital Identity World Bank Project

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially inaugurated the newly constituted Steering Committee for the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) World Bank Project. The ceremony, held recently, saw the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, delivering an inaugural speech.

Sen. Akume charged the committee with the critical task of ensuring that every Nigerian citizen is enrolled in the digital identification system. This system is envisioned to facilitate access to essential services, enhance service delivery, and bolster Nigeria’s digital economy.

The Steering Committee, chaired by the SGF, comprises key stakeholders, including the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, who serves as Secretary. Other notable members include the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate; Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi; Minister of Budget and National Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu; Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; and Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.

In his remarks, Sen. Akume, represented by Dr. Nnamdi Maurice Mbaeri, the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, affirmed the federal government’s commitment to expedite the implementation of the Strategic Roadmap for the project. He outlined the establishment of a three-tiered institutional framework consisting of a steering committee, strategic unit, and implementation unit within the NIMC to ensure efficient execution.
