Kenyan distance-running star Eliud Kipchoge has won the Melbourne Marathon in Australia, setting a new course record in a performance that further strengthens his reputation as one of the greatest marathon runners in history.

Kipchoge completed the 42.2-kilometre race in two hours, nine minutes and 10 seconds on Sunday, October 11, according to ABC News Australia and the official World Athletics results.

The 41-year-old broke away from his competitors during the final 10 kilometres before crossing the finish line at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Australian runners Thomas Do Canto and Reece Edwards finished second and third, respectively.

Kipchoge makes history in Melbourne

Kipchoge’s winning time was two seconds faster than the previous Melbourne Marathon course record.

His performance was particularly notable because the race marked his debut in Melbourne. Thousands of spectators watched as the Kenyan runner demonstrated the endurance, pacing and tactical awareness that have defined his career.

The marathon followed a route through parts of Melbourne, including St Kilda Road and the Albert Park Lake area, before finishing inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The venue added significance to the event because the stadium also hosted the marathon start and finish during the 1956 Olympic Games, marking 70 years since that historic sporting occasion.

Kipchoge said he was pleased to compete in Melbourne and celebrate the anniversary with local runners and spectators, according to ABC News Australia.

A career built on consistency

Kipchoge is a two-time Olympic marathon champion and a former world-record holder. He has spent years at the top of international distance running, winning major races and establishing himself as a leading figure in the sport.

His success has also made him an influential ambassador for athletics in Kenya and across Africa.

Kenya has produced many internationally recognised distance runners, and Kipchoge’s achievements have helped inspire younger athletes to pursue professional careers in athletics.

His latest victory comes after a period without a marathon win since 2023, according to ABC’s report. Winning in Melbourne therefore represents a significant return to the top of the podium.

Strong competition from Australian runners

Do Canto finished second in 2:10:35, while Edwards also delivered a competitive performance to secure a place on the podium.

The men’s race showcased the strength of the international field, with Kipchoge ultimately using his experience to establish a decisive advantage late in the competition.

In the women’s race, New Zealand’s Camille French won in 2:28:25. Australia’s Sinead Diver finished second, followed by Ireland’s Nichola Sheridan.

The results highlighted the international character of the Melbourne Marathon, which attracted elite athletes and recreational runners.

Importance for African athletics

Kipchoge’s victory is another positive result for Kenyan athletics and African distance running.

International victories can increase interest in athletics, create opportunities for emerging runners and strengthen the visibility of African athletes at major sporting events.

His continued participation in international races also demonstrates the value of experience, disciplined preparation and long-term commitment in endurance sports.

Kipchoge has previously spoken about his interest in encouraging people around the world to run, and the Melbourne event formed part of his broader effort to compete on different continents.

His record-breaking victory gives the 2026 Melbourne Marathon a memorable headline and adds another achievement to an already remarkable career.
