BUA Group has unveiled plans to invest $85 million in expanding its BUA Ports and Terminals facility in Port Harcourt, a major move expected to enhance cargo handling capacity and strengthen Nigeria’s maritime and industrial sectors.
The investment is part of the company’s strategy to modernise port infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and support economic growth through enhanced logistics services. It also aligns with ongoing efforts to increase the capacity of Nigeria’s eastern ports and reduce pressure on the country’s busiest maritime gateways in Lagos.
According to BUA, the expansion project will upgrade port facilities, improve cargo-handling operations and position Port Harcourt as a more competitive destination for importers, exporters and shipping companies.
The company said the investment reflects its confidence in the long-term potential of Nigeria’s maritime industry and its commitment to supporting trade and industrial development.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the project, noting that increased investment in port infrastructure is essential to improving efficiency, reducing vessel turnaround time and lowering the cost of doing business.
Nigeria’s maritime sector remains a critical pillar of the economy, with more than 80 per cent of the country’s international trade transported by sea. Experts believe expanding port infrastructure is necessary to accommodate growing cargo volumes and improve the country’s competitiveness in regional and global trade.
The development is also expected to stimulate economic activities in Rivers State and the wider Niger Delta by creating employment opportunities during construction and subsequent port operations.
The expansion of Port Harcourt Port could encourage more shipping lines to utilise eastern ports, helping to decongest Lagos ports while improving cargo distribution across the country. This would enhance supply chain efficiency and reduce transportation costs for businesses operating in the region.
Maritime analysts have consistently advocated greater investment in eastern ports, arguing that balanced development across Nigeria’s port system is crucial for sustainable growth. Improved facilities in Port Harcourt could attract new investments in manufacturing, agriculture and export-oriented industries that rely on efficient logistics.
The project also supports the Federal Government’s drive to strengthen the blue economy by encouraging private-sector participation in maritime infrastructure development.
As work progresses, stakeholders will be watching to see how the expansion improves operational performance and contributes to the overall competitiveness of Nigeria’s port industry.
With the $85 million investment, BUA is positioning Port Harcourt Port for greater efficiency and increased cargo throughput. The project is expected to enhance trade, support industrialisation and reinforce Nigeria’s ambition to become a leading maritime hub in West Africa.
