Apple Unveils M6 Chip With More Cores and Major AI Performance Boost

Apple's latest Mac silicon brings a 2nm processor, expanded Neural Engine and stronger on-device AI capabilities

Apple has unveiled its new M6 processor as the company continues to push deeper into artificial intelligence, on-device computing and high-performance personal computers.

The new chip will power a redesigned Mac Mini, while Apple is also introducing the M5 Ultra processor for an upgraded Mac Studio. The announcements underline Apple’s strategy of using increasingly powerful custom silicon to differentiate its computers from competitors.

According to Apple, the M6 is Apple’s first 2-nanometre chip and introduces a 12-core CPU, up from 10 cores in the previous M5 generation. Apple says the processor can deliver up to 1.2 times the multithreaded performance of the M5.

AI becomes central to Apple’s silicon strategy

One of the most important aspects of the M6 is not simply its processing speed.

Apple has increased its emphasis on artificial intelligence.

The M6 includes a Dual 16-core Neural Engine designed specifically for on-device AI workloads.

That matters because artificial intelligence is increasingly moving away from being something that happens exclusively in cloud data centres.

AI features can now run directly on computers and smartphones.

This approach can reduce latency.

It can also improve privacy because some information does not need to leave the user’s device.

More powerful graphics

Apple has also increased the M6’s graphics capabilities.

The processor features a 12-core GPU, compared with 10 cores in the M5.

Apple has also added a Neural Accelerator to each GPU core.

This combination could make the M6 particularly attractive to creative professionals working with video, 3D graphics, image generation and other computationally demanding applications.

For developers, stronger local AI performance could also make it easier to run smaller AI models without relying entirely on cloud services.

M5 Ultra targets professionals

Apple’s M5 Ultra is designed for users who require substantially more computing power.

The processor can feature up to a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU and a 32-core Neural Engine.

It can also support up to 512GB of unified memory.

That amount of memory is particularly relevant to professionals running large datasets, sophisticated creative applications and frontier AI models.

The changing PC market

Apple’s chip strategy is part of a broader transformation in the computer industry.

For years, personal computers were largely defined by processors supplied by Intel and AMD.

Apple changed that equation when it began designing its own silicon.

The company’s M-series processors have allowed Apple to control both hardware and software.

That gives the company greater control over performance, energy efficiency and AI capabilities.

Why AI performance matters

AI is increasingly becoming a selling point for computers.

Users now expect laptops and desktops to perform tasks such as image generation, transcription, summarisation and intelligent search.

Running these workloads locally can reduce dependence on internet connectivity.

It can also potentially reduce cloud costs.

Availability

The M6 will be available in the new Mac Mini, while the M5 Ultra will power the new Mac Studio.

Both systems are scheduled for release on September 22, with pre-orders already beginning.

Apple’s latest silicon announcement therefore represents more than another processor upgrade.

It shows how quickly AI is becoming part of the basic architecture of personal computing.
