American tennis star Coco Gauff has withdrawn from the Wuhan Open after suffering a straight-sets defeat to Belgium’s Elise Mertens in the fourth round of the China Open.

Reuters reported on October 7, 2026, that Mertens defeated Gauff 6–3, 6–3 to advance in the tournament. Gauff subsequently announced that she would not participate in the Wuhan Open, citing fatigue after what she described as a draining period.

The decision comes after several difficult days for the American, who had also faced racial abuse on social media following a controversial incident during her previous match against China’s 16-year-old Sun Xinran.

Gauff had defeated Sun 7–5, 6–1 to reach the last 16. During that match, she stopped play after noticing a flickering advertising board as Sun was preparing to hit a winner. The point was replayed, prompting criticism from some online users.

The incident generated a wave of online reactions, including racist attacks directed at Gauff. The Women’s Tennis Association condemned the abuse and expressed support for the player.

Speaking after her defeat to Mertens, Gauff acknowledged that the previous few days had been emotionally difficult. She said she had received an overwhelming amount of abuse online and explained that she was trying to move forward by limiting her exposure to social media.

The defeat against Mertens was also a setback in Gauff’s China Open campaign. The American struggled to maintain consistency, recording 34 unforced errors and eight double faults during the match.

Mertens capitalised on those mistakes and maintained her composure to secure the victory in straight sets.

The Belgian’s performance demonstrated the importance of consistency and control in high-level tennis, particularly when facing an opponent known for her athleticism and aggressive baseline game.

Gauff’s withdrawal from the Wuhan Open means she will miss an event she won in 2025. The tournament is part of the WTA’s Asian swing, a demanding period in which players travel between major competitions.

Her decision highlights the physical and emotional pressures that professional tennis players face during a packed tournament calendar.

For elite athletes, recovery is essential, and withdrawing from a tournament can be a practical decision when fatigue threatens performance and well-being.

Gauff remains one of the leading figures in women’s tennis, and attention will now turn to her recovery and preparations for upcoming events.

The episode has also renewed discussion about online harassment in sport, particularly the abuse directed at athletes following controversial moments during matches.

Tennis governing bodies continue to face pressure to protect players from racist attacks and other forms of online abuse.
