The United States Mission in Nigeria has urged Nigerian travellers to strictly comply with U.S. immigration laws and ensure they do not overstay their authorised period of stay in the country.

In a statement shared on its official X handle on Tuesday, the mission emphasised that adherence to visa conditions is essential for maintaining eligibility for future entry into the United States.

It advised applicants to always respect the terms of their visas, keep their travel documents updated, and avoid actions that could jeopardise future travel, study, or work opportunities.

“Staying compliant with U.S. immigration laws isn’t just the right thing to do; it protects your future and keeps opportunities open for Nigerian travelers,” the statement read.

The mission further noted that compliance with immigration rules is critical for safeguarding both individual prospects and the integrity of the visa system.

It added that travellers must ensure they remain in the United States only for the duration authorised under their visa category.

“Whether you’re studying, working, or visiting the United States, always honour the terms of your visa. Follow the rules. Stay only for as long as you are authorized. Keep your documents updated. Make choices that safeguard your dreams,” the mission stated.

The advisory comes amid ongoing efforts by U.S. authorities to reduce visa overstays and strengthen enforcement of immigration regulations.

According to the mission, respecting immigration processes benefits both travellers and bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United States.

“When you respect the process, everyone wins,” it added.

The statement reaffirmed that these measures are intended to protect the integrity of the visa system and ensure continued access for genuine travellers engaging in lawful study, tourism, and business activities.
