Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria (FICAN) has elected its first female chairman since the association was established 36 years ago.
Bukola Aro-Lambo of Leadership Newspapers emerged as chairman during the association’s election held in Lagos, becoming the first woman to lead the body since its formation in 1989.
Her election is being regarded by members as a historic moment for both the association and Nigeria’s financial journalism industry.
FICAN is one of Nigeria’s leading media beat associations and comprises journalists covering the country’s financial services sector, including banking, capital markets, insurance, pensions, monetary policy, and the broader economy.
The election also produced a new executive team that will oversee the affairs of the association during the next tenure.
Tony Chukwuyem of New Telegraph was elected vice chairman, while Abiola Ismail of MITV emerged as general secretary.
Other elected officials include Ebere Obike-Franklin of Radio Nigeria as assistant general secretary, Salamatu Ejembe of Voice of Nigeria as financial secretary, and Comfort Ekeleme of Champion Newspapers as treasurer.
Members at the election described Aro-Lambo’s emergence as a reflection of the growing influence of women in Nigeria’s media and financial reporting landscape.
They noted that her leadership could encourage greater inclusiveness, diversity, and representation within the journalism profession.
Over the years, FICAN has played a major role in shaping public discourse around key economic and financial issues, including banking reforms, capital market activities, inflation, exchange rate management, pensions, insurance, and monetary policy.
The association remains one of the most influential journalism groups covering Nigeria’s financial sector and macroeconomic developments.
