Nigerian Afrobeats star Wizkid has become the first African artist to surpass 11 billion total streams on Spotify across all credited appearances, further cementing his status as one of the continent’s most commercially successful global music exports.
The milestone was announced on Tuesday by music analytics platform Charts Africa, which highlighted Wizkid’s continued dominance across multiple Spotify streaming records in African music history.
According to the platform, Wizkid remains the first African artist to reach one billion, two billion, 10 billion, and now 11 billion cumulative Spotify streams.
The latest achievement comes shortly after the release of “State of Mind,” his collaboration with DJ Tunez, which debuted on May 15, 2026, and reportedly recorded over 685,000 global streams within its first day on Spotify.
The record reinforces the growing global commercial strength of Afrobeats, a genre that has transformed Nigerian artists into major players in the international digital music economy.
Wizkid’s streaming dominance also traces back to landmark moments in global music history, including his feature on One Dance with Drake, which became one of the first songs to surpass one billion Spotify streams.
Other African artists have also continued to break streaming barriers in recent years. Rema became the first African lead artist to reach one billion streams with “Calm Down,” while Tems became the first African female artist associated with a one-billion-stream record.
Similarly, Tyla became the first African solo artist to achieve the milestone with “Water,” highlighting the widening global reach of African pop music beyond Nigeria.
Earlier in 2026, Wizkid and Asake also made headlines with their collaboration “Jogodo,” which became one of the fastest African songs to reach 10 million Spotify streams in under a week.
Industry data suggests that Nigerian artists continue to dominate global Afrobeats streaming performance, reflecting the genre’s rapid expansion across digital platforms and international audiences.
Spotify has previously acknowledged the growing global appeal of Nigerian music, identifying key artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, and others as leading figures in the genre’s international success.
The latest milestone further underscores Afrobeats’ position as one of the fastest-growing global music movements.
