Activist and political commentator Aisha Yesufu has announced her resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and her defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where she also declared her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat.
Yesufu made the announcement on Wednesday evening via her X (formerly Twitter) handle, saying her decision was driven by a renewed political direction aligned with opposition realignment efforts.
“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she wrote.
She added that her earlier support for Obi informed her initial move to the ADC, but said her continued political commitment now necessitated joining the NDC.
“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise, I am joining the NDC… not just as a member but also as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she said.
Yesufu stated that she had completed all formal obligations with the ADC, describing her exit as a “clean transition” and expressing appreciation for colleagues within the party.
“I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country,” she noted, adding that she had served in various leadership roles including sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary.
Her defection comes shortly after Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso reportedly aligned with the NDC, citing internal disputes and prolonged legal battles within the ADC.
The ADC and NDC are expected to experience further political realignments in the coming weeks as Nigeria’s opposition landscape continues to shift ahead of future elections.
