President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Romuald Wadagni on his decisive victory in the Republic of Benin’s presidential election held on April 12, describing the outcome as a strong expression of public confidence in the president-elect’s leadership.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said Wadagni’s emergence reflected the trust the Beninese people placed in his vision and record of public service as Minister of Finance.

Wadagni reportedly secured about 94 percent of the vote according to provisional results released by the electoral commission, while his main opponent, Paul Hounkpe, conceded defeat before the final declaration and called for respect for democratic norms.

In a personally signed letter, Tinubu wrote: “On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I extend my warmest congratulations to you on your election as the President of the Republic of Benin following the polls held on April 12, 2026.”

He also commended the conduct of the election, describing it as peaceful and reflective of Benin’s democratic maturity and political stability.

“This transition marks a significant chapter in your nation’s history,” Tinubu said, praising citizens for their commitment to peace and orderly democratic participation.

The President emphasized the strong historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Benin, pledging continued cooperation in areas of security, trade, and regional integration within ECOWAS and the African Union.

“Our two nations share a long history of friendship, cultural ties, and cooperation,” he noted, adding that he looks forward to working closely with the incoming administration to deepen bilateral relations and promote economic prosperity in West Africa.

Tinubu also assured Wadagni of Nigeria’s support as he prepares to assume office, wishing him success and wisdom in his new responsibilities.

The election, which recorded a turnout of about 58.75 percent, was widely described as peaceful, with observers from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) commending the process despite minor irregularities.

Wadagni’s victory is seen as a continuation of the reform-driven economic policies of outgoing President Patrice Talon, under whom he served as a key figure in financial management and infrastructure development.
