The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered another setback in the House of Representatives following the defection of Mr Aliyu Misau, who represents Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency of Bauchi State.
Misau formally joined the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) on Wednesday. His decision comes just days after four other members of the Bauchi caucus in the House of Representatives left the PDP for the APM.
The lawmaker announced his defection through a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas. The letter was read during plenary on Wednesday.
In the letter, Misau blamed the prolonged leadership crisis within the PDP for his decision to leave the party.
He expressed gratitude to the PDP for giving him the platform to serve his constituents. However, he said the party’s internal challenges had made it difficult for him to effectively represent the people of Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency and contribute to their development.
The latest defection is widely linked to the recent political realignment in Bauchi State. Governor Bala Mohammed’s reported move from the PDP to the APM has triggered a wave of defections among political office holders and party supporters in the state.
Political analysts had predicted that lawmakers loyal to the governor would eventually follow his lead due to his strong influence on the state’s political structure.
Misau’s departure further reduces the PDP’s numerical strength in the House of Representatives. It also highlights the growing challenges facing the opposition party as it struggles with internal divisions and defections in several states.
For months, the PDP has been battling leadership disputes at both the national and state levels. Disagreements over party direction, control of structures, and preparations for future elections have continued to create tension among key stakeholders.
The crisis has already led to the exit of several elected officials and prominent party members, raising concerns about the PDP’s ability to remain united ahead of future political contests.
With Misau now in the APM, the party continues to strengthen its foothold in Bauchi State through the influx of influential political figures and elected representatives from the PDP.
