The only male child of Nigeria’s late former president, Muhammadu Buhari, Yusuf Buhari, has formally declared his intention to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives in the 2027 general elections.
Yusuf Buhari disclosed his ambition in a letter dated April 3, 2026, which he personally signed. The letter, titled “Expression of Interest to Contest for the Seat of House of Representatives Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency,” outlines his plan to run under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In the letter, Yusuf said he decided to join the race after extensive consultations with stakeholders and supporters in his constituency. He noted that his aspiration is aimed at contributing to effective leadership and development in the constituency.
“With all respect, I am extremely delighted to write and inform you of my intention to contest for the seat of House of Representatives at the above-mentioned constituency (Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua), under the platform of APC,” he wrote.
He added that his ambition is driven by a desire to deliver infrastructural development and improve human capital in the constituency if elected.
“After wide consultations, I wish to contest for the seat of the House of Representatives, Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua, as my contribution to ensure good and qualitative leadership,” Yusuf stated in the letter.
He also appealed for support from party members and constituents, saying their encouragement would help him achieve his political goal and enable him to serve the people effectively.
Yusuf Buhari’s declaration comes barely a week after stakeholders of the APC in Sandamu Local Government Area of Katsina State publicly endorsed him as their preferred candidate for the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency.
The endorsement was made during a high-level meeting held at the Sandamu Local Government Secretariat, which was attended by elected officials and political appointees from across the federal constituency.
Addressing participants at the meeting, the council chairman, Usman Na-Lado, described the endorsement as a collective decision by party stakeholders.
According to him, Yusuf Buhari was considered a suitable candidate due to what he described as his capacity and growing acceptance among party members in the constituency.
Na-Lado further revealed that the meeting also reaffirmed the stakeholders’ support for President Bola Tinubu and Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda as the APC’s candidates for the presidency and governorship positions respectively in the 2027 general elections.
Sources within the party, however, indicated that Yusuf Buhari’s endorsement by the Sandamu stakeholders followed what they described as a directive from Governor Radda.
One of the sources said the development signals strong backing from the state government for Yusuf Buhari’s political ambition.
“Yusuf Buhari is the state governor’s anointed candidate,” the source disclosed.
