Mexican soldiers reportedly killed Nemesio Oseguera,” one of the most wanted drug lords in Mexico and the United States, media outlets including El Universal, Reforma, and Televisa reported on Sunday.
Oseguera had a $15 million bounty on his head and was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of Mexico’s most violent drug trafficking organizations. US authorities formally classify the cartel as a terrorist organization, accusing it of smuggling cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl into the United States.
Earlier in Jalisco, people armed with firearms set vehicles ablaze and blocked roads to disrupt the security operation targeting the cartel leader. The violence spread to neighboring Michoacan, where Oseguera’s organization also operates.
Oseguera’s death is considered one of the biggest blows to Mexican drug trafficking since the capture of Sinaloa cartel founders Joaquin Guzman and Ismael Zambada, who are currently serving prison sentences in the United States.
