Peru’s Congress has impeached interim President Jose Jeri, marking the country’s seventh head of state to be removed in a decade amid corruption-related claims. Jeri, 39, faced allegations of irregularly hiring multiple women in his administration and suspected graft involving a Chinese businessman.

Appointed last October to complete the term of former President Dina Boluarte, Jeri has protested his innocence. Prosecutors are investigating whether he exerted undue influence in government appointments and possible “illegal sponsorship of interests” following a secret meeting with a Chinese businessman. Investigative reporting revealed that at least nine women were allegedly given government positions after meetings with Jeri.

The impeachment comes ahead of Peru’s April 12 elections, in which a record 30-plus candidates are competing. Right-wing candidate Rafael Lopez Aliaga, who leads in opinion polls, was among the most vocal in calling for Jeri’s ouster.

Following the vote, Congress will elect a new parliament president, who will automatically assume the role of interim president until July. Political analysts warn that finding a replacement with legitimacy may be difficult given widespread suspicions of corruption in the current legislature.

Peru’s political instability is compounded by a surge in organized crime and extortion, with reported cases increasing from 2,396 to over 25,000 in just two years, disproportionately affecting public transport operators.

The South American nation continues to grapple with weak institutional oversight and political volatility, leaving citizens wary as elections approach.
