The inaugural Renewed Hope Ikeja Federal Constituency Basketball Championship officially began on Monday at the Police College court in Ikeja, bringing together 18 teams across the constituency’s political wards for a week of intense competition and significant cash prizes.

The tournament is sponsored by Olawale Fadare, personal assistant on general duties to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with support from Young Professionals for Tinubu, a coalition of emerging industry leaders. According to organisers, the championship aims to promote youth engagement, empowerment and community development through sports.

During the jersey presentation ceremony, Francis Nkwo, leader of the House in the Onigbongbo LCDA, encouraged players and officials to demonstrate discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the event.

Tournament coordinator Kenneth Agba assured participants of a well-organised competition, expressing hope that the championship would serve as a stepping stone for young athletes seeking brighter futures in basketball.

Agba confirmed that cash prizes of N500,000, N300,000, N200,000, and N100,000 would be awarded to the top four teams, while each of the remaining 14 teams will receive N50,000 as consolation.
