The Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Ned Nwoko, has stated that he never pursued his estranged wife, actress Regina Daniels, for marriage, amid ongoing public controversy over their six-year union.
The controversy erupted after Regina Daniels accused Nwoko of domestic violence two weeks ago and expressed that she was no longer interested in continuing their marriage. In response, the Senator alleged that Regina was struggling with substance abuse and insisted she seek help at a rehabilitation center.
The public exchange drew widespread criticism, with many Nigerians—including celebrities—condemning Nwoko for allegedly marrying Regina when she was 17 years old, and calling for his resignation from the Senate.
Addressing the controversy in a statement released to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) through his Communication and Technical Action Team, Nwoko denied marrying Regina at 17 and said her mother, Rita Daniels, brought her to him for marriage.
“For clarity, Regina Daniels was born October 10, 2000. If she has been married to me for six years, that means she married at 19 and not 17. The public witnessed her family giving her away in marriage. There were witnesses to the fact that her mother personally brought her to me. I never went after her,” Nwoko said.
The Senator’s statement aims to clarify the timeline of the marriage and refute allegations of impropriety, as public debate continues over the high-profile couple’s legal and personal affairs.
