The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has debunked circulating rumours that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates has been cancelled.
In a press release shared on Sunday via its official X handle, the Council described the reports as “false and mischievous,” and urged the public to disregard them.
The viral claim alleged that the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with WAEC, had scrapped the entire exam due to widespread malpractice, leakage of question papers, and unauthorised digital dissemination of materials.
“The WAEC Management would like to state unequivocally that the spurious press statement being circulated did not emanate from the Council,” WAEC said. “The said examination has not been cancelled.”
WAEC described the rumour as the work of “mischief-makers” intent on discrediting the Council and inciting panic among candidates and stakeholders.
“As a matter of fact, the marking of scripts has just been concluded, and results will be released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025,” the Council confirmed.
WAEC further cautioned the public to rely only on verified information from its official platforms and not to fall for unverified social media posts.
“All information from the Council is disseminated via our official and verified social media handles, as well as accredited media platforms,” the statement read. “All press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.”
The clarification comes amid rising anxiety among students and parents, many of whom were alarmed by the widely circulated fake report.
