Maryam Abacha, widow of the late former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has dismissed long-standing allegations that her husband looted billions of dollars during his time in office.
In an interview with TVC on Sunday, Mrs. Abacha strongly denied that any money was stolen, arguing that there has never been credible evidence to support such claims.
“Who is the witness of the monies that were being stashed? Did you see the signature or the evidence of any monies stashed abroad?” she asked.
She further claimed that funds allegedly secured by her husband for the country mysteriously vanished shortly after his death.
“And the monies that my husband kept for Nigeria, in a few months, the monies vanished. People are not talking about that,” she said.
Maryam Abacha also criticised the continued public and media scrutiny of her husband nearly three decades after his passing.
“Why are you blaming somebody? Is that tribalism or a religious problem or what is the problem with Nigerians?” she asked.
Defending her husband’s legacy, she cited Nigeria’s improved foreign reserves and reduced external debt during his rule.
“So, where did he steal the money from?” she questioned. “And because Nigerians are fools, they listen to everything.”
She concluded by urging national unity and an end to divisive narratives.
“Abacha does not make Nigeria alone. Even the single man on the street is very important. We are all human beings, for goodness sake. All these wahala should stop.”
