The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has called on the government, private sector, and civil society to champion inclusive policies that guarantee decent employment, protect workers’ rights, and ensure social justice across Nigeria’s economic landscape.
In a statement released on Thursday, signed by Olayemi John-Mensah, Media and Strategy Officer of the ACCI, the Chamber commemorated the 2025 International Workers’ Day, celebrated annually on May 1st, by acknowledging the critical contributions of Nigerian workers and stressing the importance of fair labour practices.
Themed “Social Justice and Decent Work”, this year’s observance urges global stakeholders to create fair, inclusive, and safe workplaces that uphold the dignity and rights of all workers.
“Today is a celebration of the hardworking and dedicated individuals who keep our economy running. Nigerian workers have remained steadfast, contributing not only to the growth of their families but to the advancement of our nation,” said ACCI President, Emeka Obegolu.
He praised the unwavering commitment of Nigerian workers across both formal and informal sectors, describing them as the backbone of national progress and vital contributors to family stability.
Obegolu also used the occasion to advocate for labour-friendly policies, particularly in the informal sector, noting that productivity thrives in environments where workers are treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.
“We believe that social justice and economic growth must go hand-in-hand. There is a need to bridge the gap between legislative intentions and real workplace realities,” he added.
The Chamber further encouraged the government to implement equitable wage structures, enhance workplace safety, and support inclusive employment opportunities to foster sustainable development.
Obegolu extended warm wishes to Nigerian workers and specifically acknowledged the dedication of ACCI staff and members of the broader Nigerian Chamber movement, saying their efforts power the engine of the economy.
“On behalf of the Executive Council and members of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, I wish all workers a happy and fulfilling International Workers’ Day. Your efforts are appreciated and celebrated,” he concluded.
