Okiemute Crowned King of Scrabble in The Jungle, Hardcore Edition

Delta State-based player, Okiemute, has emerged victorious in the highly competitive Scrabble In The Jungle, Hardcore Edition, held over the weekend in Lagos. The 23-round tournament saw Okiemute triumph with 15 wins, securing the crown after a thrilling two-day contest.

The tournament, one of the most intense Scrabble events in Africa, featured top players, including Grandmaster John Aiyedun, Africa’s No. 2 George Ezinore, and former African champion Enoch Nwali. Hosted in Ikeja, Lagos, the event brought together elite Scrabble minds for a rigorous test of endurance and skill.

Okiemute solidified his victory when he defeated his closest rival, Nwali, in round 22, with a commanding score of 492-366. This victory guaranteed him the title with one game to spare. Known for his fast-paced play and ability to drop ‘Bingos’ at lightning speed, Okiemute displayed exceptional strategy throughout the tournament.

Despite leading on Day One with an 8-5 record, Nwali struggled on Day Two, losing six of his last 10 rounds. He finished second with 12 wins and 11 defeats, while Ezinore took third with the same number of wins but a lower cumulative score. Aiyedun, the top-ranked player heading into the contest, ended the tournament with a disappointing 7-16 result.

Reflecting on his victory, Okiemute shared his excitement, “It’s a great start for me. This title is important as I head into the World Championship and National Sports Festival next year. I’ve been close to winning before, but now I know I can do it. I’m dedicating this win to God and my new wife.”

In recognition of his victory, Okiemute was awarded a cash prize of 200,000 Naira, while other top players received various prizes. The tournament attracted global attention, with fans and Scrabble enthusiasts following the matches online.
