IPAC Adopts New Constitution to Bolster Nigeria’s Democracy and Promote Inclusivity

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) unveils a comprehensive new constitution focused on transparency, gender inclusion, and electoral integrity to strengthen Nigeria's democratic framework.

Following a three-day technical session held from December 17–19, 2024, at Bon Hotel Ikeja Lagos,  Lagos  the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has issued a communique highlighting the adoption of a new, inclusive constitution.

The session, which brought together representatives from 19 political parties and was observed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was supported by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) and funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO).

The communique signed by the National Chairman of the Council Alhaji  Yusuf M. Dantalle outlines key resolutions and decisions made during the session, with a primary focus on fostering internal governance, promoting transparency, accountability, and gender inclusion, as well as enhancing democratic processes within Nigeria.

Amongst the resolutions adopted by the council, IPAC pledged to prioritize its role in supporting free, fair, transparent, and inclusive elections. The council emphasized the importance of electoral reforms, the rule of law, and adherence to constitutional provisions by political parties. IPAC also committed to addressing challenges such as voter apathy, electoral violence, and vote-buying through advocacy and civic engagement initiatives.

Another major highlight of the communique is the introduction of an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism aimed at mediating conflicts among member political parties. This initiative is designed to foster unity and ensure peaceful resolutions within the council.

IPAC also reiterated its commitment to collaborating with INEC and other stakeholders to promote electoral integrity, focusing on compliance with Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution and existing electoral laws.

Furthermore, the council acknowledged the gender gap in political representation and pledged its support for the passage of the Special Seat Reservation for Women in the National and State Houses of Assembly Bill, currently under consideration by the National Assembly.

The adoption of the draft IPAC Constitution marks a significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions. IPAC remains steadfast in its mission to promote unity among political parties, ensure credible elections, and support democratic governance across the country.
