President Bola Tinubu has approved a major expansion of Nigeria’s military, authorising the recruitment of 28,000 additional soldiers and the creation of four new army divisions as the country intensifies its response to persistent security challenges.
The expansion represents one of the largest recent increases in Nigeria’s military capacity and is designed to strengthen the armed forces’ ability to respond to Islamist insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and communal violence across the country.
Under the plan, Nigeria’s total number of army divisions will increase to 12. The new divisions will include additional headquarters located in regions that have experienced significant security challenges, allowing military authorities to improve their presence and respond more quickly to emerging threats.
The decision follows a series of deadly attacks and kidnappings that have continued to affect communities despite recent military successes against armed groups.
Security agencies have faced sustained pressure to protect civilians, secure remote communities and disrupt the activities of criminal and extremist organisations operating in different parts of the country.
The military expansion is part of a broader effort by the Tinubu administration to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture. The president has also pledged to recruit more than 50,000 additional police officers as part of efforts to improve law enforcement and internal security.
The government has further allocated a record $4 billion for defence and security in the national budget, underscoring the administration’s focus on addressing the country’s security challenges.
Officials expect the creation of new army divisions and the recruitment of additional personnel to improve intelligence gathering, coordination and response times. A stronger military presence in vulnerable areas could also enable security forces to respond more rapidly to attacks and protect communities more effectively.
However, analysts have raised concerns about the challenges involved in attracting and retaining enough military personnel. Nigerian soldiers continue to operate in high-risk environments, facing significant threats from insurgents, armed criminals and other violent groups.
The expansion will therefore require more than simply increasing troop numbers. Effective training, adequate equipment, improved welfare and strong intelligence capabilities will be critical to ensuring that additional personnel can operate effectively.
The government is also expected to face the challenge of maintaining public confidence while ensuring that security operations are conducted professionally and with respect for civilian protection.
